Is Spring Here Yet?

It is almost Spring and I admit, I have Spring fever. Although the first day of daylight savings time is grim, it does mean one thing... Spring is almost here! I usually find myself creating pictures of young forest animals and spring blooms. This painting is titled Wolf Pup in Spring Blooms and is 15 x 20 soft pastel on suede matboard. I will be entering it in the Placerville Arts Association's Spring Membership Show, April 4th through 8th at 360 Fair Lane in Placerville, California. I finished this over the summer and just love how it turned out. The hardness of the gun is balanced with the soft curls of the dogs ears. This Springer Spaniel is a working dog, so I wanted to portray Maggie out in the field, doing what she loves, with her owner by her side. Her eyes are raised to the sky, looking for a bird taking wing.

Its been declared a drought year in California this year... but we did get a good snow storm in the Silverpine Forest. Being stuck inside by a warm fire is a great work environment for this artist! I am titling my blog today Finessing It as a reminder to myself. I have everything in the right place now, in my latest portrait, and now all I have to do is put in the details.... just finesse it to perfection. Add the frosting... and make it delicious!

I love the free spirit of this horse. As an artist my goal was to capture that sense of movement and beauty. I used a palette knife on the background, to get that feel of uncontrolled motion. I also love the way the mane is swept forward, as it is moving faster than the horse.

This is my 3 year old paint filly Naboo. I've had her since she was a weanling so she is a big sweetheart. I am having her portrait done thru the EBSQ show Pet Swap where artists paint each others pets. This is my first time entering the Pet Swap so I am excited! I'll be sure to share the results !

Hey everyone! I am proud to say that my first art competition resulted in a Best of Show award in the amateur division! My painting Motherly Love- Grey Wolves received a first place in the wildlife class and the best of show award! My other painting in the same class Buck in Spring Velvet received second place! And the other painting I entered in the Acrylic class of a young coyote recieved first place! It was an amazing experience to walk into the fine art exhibit and see that I had won both classes and took best of show for the whole division! You can see how proud I am as I stand next to my first place acrylic painting.
